How Curly Hair Changed My Life!

In Jan. 2023, I got a perm after a breakup I had. Well, I laugh when I call it a breakup now because the relationship lasted about a week. This was also almost a year before I met my current boyfriend. So obviously I had to do a make over. Any twenty year old would know what I mean.

Anyway, I got a perm, and I loved it. I really did. The curls felt fun, different, and honestly a bit like a version of myself I had never met before. What surprised me most, though, was how many people assumed it was my natural hair. Even friends I had known for a year or two believed it without question.

At some point, I started to play into it. I didn’t correct people. I didn’t really explain it. And before I knew it, the perm stopped being just a hairstyle and started feeling like an identity.It wasn’t something I openly talked about. I’m not even sure when it became something I avoided mentioning, but it did. It just became easier not to explain it.

Now I think about how strange that is, how something so simple became something I didn’t feel like I could just say out loud.

Some, if not all, of the photos on this blog feature my curly hair. And in a way, they also capture that version of me during that time, whether I was being fully honest about it or not.
